Urgent need to help family keep the lights on for single mom and teenage sons
During an outreach event for free school supplies in Chaska on Saturday, a single mother approached the CAP Agency booth and told the coordinator this need in so many words: It is with a heavy heart and a humble request that I ask for assistance. I am a single mother of five children — three of whom I’ve already raised and are now out on their own. I am still raising my two youngest teenagers at home, and despite my best efforts, I am facing a situation that I can no longer handle on my own. Although I work hard at a full-time job, I live paycheck to paycheck. Due to ongoing financial hardships and with no child support to help carry the weight, I’ve fallen behind on my utility bill. I’ve just been informed that our electricity is scheduled to be shut off if I cannot pay the past-due amount of $570 by Wednesday. This situation has left me feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and desperate. My children rely on electricity not only for basic needs like light, cooking, and staying cool in this heat — but also for their education and well-being. I have always done my best to provide for my family. I work hard, I budget, and I sacrifice. But the rising cost of living and the challenges of being a single parent with limited support have made it incredibly difficult to stay afloat. I never imagined myself in a position where I’d have to ask for help like this, but today, I am reaching out because I have no other options. If you are in a position to help in any way — whether by contributing to this need or sharing this with someone who might be able to — my children and I would be deeply grateful. Every little bit helps, and your kindness could be the difference between darkness and light in our home this week. What caused this need?
Her oldest at home, 15 years old was able to join the football team, but this incurred added expenses as well. She has rent that takes 42% of her take home pay, she pays for a vehicle to get to work and has high car insurance. She was at the Chaska Outreach event in order to get school supplies for her youngest. Luckily, she was able to secure a backpack full of free school supplies. She was referred to food shelves close to where she lives.
