What caused this need?

This is a young family of 4 that is struggling to make ends meet. Both of their vehicles have broken down in the last few weeks. One car needs a new transmission and stick - quotes are around $1200-1500. 2nd car (saab) needs a new muffler and the quote is around $600. This family barely avoided eviction this month and really needs at least one car in order for the father to keep his job. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
