What caused this need?

I'm working with a Mom who has three young school age kids and is having difficulty affording school clothes and shoes for her children. She is also seeking help towards a YMCA membership. The family has been in turmoil for about a year now, since the children's father left. They are staying with relatives as they lost their housing when the father was battling his own chemical dependency issues. Mom works at maintaining the most stable home situation as possible but has mental health issues of her own that she struggles with. During this time one of the children has started eating excessively to cope, and because of this has gained a lot of weight. This child has been bullied and teased due to the weight gain. Mom would like to get a YMCA membership to help her son become more active and learn better coping skills. This would also be beneficial for morale of the family, as they could spend time together having fun.
