What caused this need?

I am working with a family, two married parents with three common children under age 9. The family has experienced a financial crisis in the past month. The mother doesn?t work much because she also is the primary care provider for their children. The father, who typically gets a regular amount of hours at work, experienced a decrease in work hours in the past month due to slower business at his place of work. The family also experienced a death in the family, and therefore helped provide for some funeral expenses. Because of these unexpected expenses the family has fallen behind on August rent and August and July utilities. In the past the family has been sustainable in paying rent, and has never had an issue of being late. The family is confident that if they catch up on their rent, they will be able to continue paying rent and utilities on their own as they have done in the past.
